Save as CSV

You may need to save an Excel spreadsheet as a csv or text file to be able to import it into a new program that needs that format. Follow the steps below to do this in Excel 2013.

  1. Open the spreadsheet you would like to save as a CSV file
  2. Go to File>Save As> Choose were you would like to save the file
  3. Change the “Save as type:” to “CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv)” and click “Save”
  4. It will ask if you would like to keep using that format, and click “Yes”
  5. Now close the sheet and click “Don’t Save”

Depending on the formulas, rules and formats you have in your sheet, sometimes if you click “Save” on exit it will change the format and the program you are importing into will not be able to read the columns data.

You may find if you create the csv file on a different computer to the one you are using to import the file with you will have errors during the import. If this happens, open the csv file on the machine you are importing with, check your formats are still correct, and save it as csv again. Now you should be able to import without errors.
